When withdrawing casino winnings to a South African bank account, know that the transfer moves through three stages: casino approval, bank submission and inter-bank clearing. Delays usually come from the stage the payout is stuck in, not the bank name.

The Payout is Not One Thing

An EFT casino withdrawal starts life as a payment from the casino, not an EFT from your bank.

Stage 1: The casino reviews and approves the withdrawal, which can include verification checks on a first payout, and then sends the payment instruction to its bank.

Payments submitted after a bank's daily cut-off time are usually processed on the next business day, and standard EFT batches are not cleared on weekends or public holidays.

Stage 2: When the EFT reaches your bank, it may wait in its database until the next business day. Payments to other banks can take up to 2 business days to clear. Standard EFTs are not cleared on public holidays, so batches submitted on a Friday afternoon may not clear until Tuesday if the Monday is a holiday.

Stage 3: Not until this point does your bank let your money into your account. Transfers to an account at another bank can take up to 2 business days to clear, while payments between accounts at the same bank are usually faster.

Why Friday and Holidays Slow Everything Down

A withdrawal requested right before the weekend or a public-holiday can end up sitting until the next business day.

Standard EFTs only process on business days, and weekends and public holidays are not business days. The interbank clearing system does not process standard EFT batches on weekends or public holidays.

For example, Friday-afternoon payments submitted before a four-day public-holiday weekend may not reflect until Tuesday if the following Monday is also a holiday.

Casino withdrawals by standard EFT follow the same Monday-to-Friday rhythm, so a payout approved over the weekend or late on a Friday will usually be processed the following Monday.

What Banks Actually Do

All banks treat incoming EFTs as interbank payments, and apply the same internal-transfers-and-other-banks rules.

The usual rule for transferring money to another bank’s account is that it can take up to 2 business days to complete. Payments between accounts at the same bank usually reflect sooner.

When a casino marks a withdrawal as approved, it has only dispatched the payment to its bank and confirmed the instruction for inter-bank clearing. The money still needs to reach your bank and be cleared into your account.

If you receive no proof of payment but your bank’s EFT showing as pending for longer than the bank's standard internal timelines, contact the casino. If your casino’s transfers take longer than the bank’s standard external timelines, consider a faster, more expensive option.

When to Follow Up

If your casino shows a withdrawal as approved, but your bank record shows no instruction pending after the expected business days, you should chase for proof.

Most importantly, learn to spot when the withdrawal has moved from casino control to bank processing. Then, you know to apply the public- or bank-holiday rule: anything started on a weekend or holiday cannot clear until the next business day.
